Dawn McCloskey Awarded "Most Organized Mom"

Cumming resident Dawn McCloskey has been honored as the “Most Organized Mom” by organize.com – a website devoted to organizational products. McCloskey’s 16 year old daughter, Taylor Reinsfelder, nominated McCloskey with an essay explaining her perfectly planned systems, strict routines, quirky habits, and how she looks at organization with a positive and confident attitude. (Reinsfelder’s essay is printed below.)

McCloskey has always been organized. Being organized not only helped her juggle the role of being a single, working parent when Taylor was two, but enabled her to be involved in community activities. “Keeping to a schedule, writing things on a calendar and on a ‘to do’ list, and putting things back where they belong is what keeps a smooth-running household whether you are single or married,” replied McCloskey when asked, “How do you stay so organized?”

Today, as a wife, mother, and entrepreneur, McCloskey is more organized than ever. Taking a tour of the McCloskey home, you will see a neatly stocked pantry, an alphabetized spice rack, organized files, and labeled storage containers everywhere. Not only family members, but guests can see where items belong. Ask McCloskey for an item, and she’ll be able to hand it to you within seconds.

When McCloskey’s youngest child started attending school, a friend posed the question, “McCloskey, what would you really like to do?” Without missing a beat, McCloskey replied, “I would love to be a professional organizer!” In October 2006, Ultra Organized, LLC was born. Organizing comes naturally to McCloskey, but she realizes that not everyone has that ability and she is eager to motivate others to achieve their goal of having a stress-free home.

McCloskey enjoys helping others save time, money, and frequently their sanity by working with them as a team to organize people’s homes. It’s such a feeling of accomplishment and pride when someone says, “Wow! The place looks wonderful. Everything has a home. I couldn’t have done it without you!”

McCloskey is a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and the Georgia Chapter and adheres to the Code of Ethics regarding client confidentiality. For more information about Ultra Organized, based in Cumming, Georgia, please visit: www.ultraorganized.com

The Winning Entry

Dear Organize.com,

I read your description of what the ultimate organized mother is, and my mom exceeds your expectations. One of my friends defines her organizing as, "even her colors are color coded." My Mom is the most organized woman you will ever meet. Every square inch of her house is immaculate and dust-free. Her life is the same way.

I'll start with the kitchen since it's one of her favorite areas. As soon as you open the cupboards you see rows of containers stacked according to shape, color, and purpose. Her most commonly used recipes are typed up on note cards and filed in order in a recipe box. If you decide to go into the pantry, you will be able to see that organizing is her passion. Her spice rack is in alphabetical order, so that things are easier to find. All baking ingredients are in rectangular and square containers so that they stack well and take up less space. Each container is plastic so you can see what's in them, in case you have a difficult time reading the typed labels she sticks on them. Ingredients in the pantry are organized by purposes as well. For example, cereals are in containers next to each other, flour and types of sugar are together, and everything else is as well. I will say that things are easy to find though.

Next I'll move on to the office. My Mom's office looks like something out of an Office Depot. If you slide out a desk drawer you will notice that everything is in small plastic baskets so that they fit better and you can find things. She has a filing cabinet where all of her documents are placed in color coded and labeled file folders, and then alphabetized. She keeps a calendar on her computer with dates, times, places, people, and phone numbers listed. She synchronizes the calendar with her phone and does it so that she gets reminders throughout the day. She also keeps to-do lists on the computer and sets dates that each task needs to be done by. As she accomplishes each item she checks it off and saves it for future reference.

When you go into her bedroom closet you will continue to be amazed by how organized she is. Underneath her bathroom sink are storage containers where things are also sorted. Walk into her closet and you will see the extent of her organizing. The closet is divided into two major sections: his and hers, and then divided into smaller sections. Clothes are organized by season, occasion, fabric, type of garment, and color. Sweaters are folded neatly with the rounded side facing out so that the sweaters are all in the same direction and won't wrinkle. Her shoes are also in containers and labeled according to size, color, material, and type. She uses wooden hangers that won't stretch out her clothes and had an extra storage rack installed so things look less crowded. She tries to go through her closet ever few months and donates to charity anything she hasn't worn lately.

Despite how much time she spends cleaning and organizing the house, she always makes time for her family and friends. She volunteers for Meals On Wheels on Mondays, exercises, helps at my sister's school by organizing fundraisers, takes my sister to practices, and helps with schoolwork. She prepares us lunches where every food group is represented. She makes time for herself as well. She meets with her friends every Monday night for "Knit Wits" a group of close friends that knit together and share stories over drinks and snacks she usually brings. She also meets with her sister for coffee and Scrabble on Wednesdays.

It's amazing how much my Mom manages to do. She organizes her home, her life, and ours. I can't think of anyone else that could be called the "Most Organized Mom."
